The Experience of Injured soldiers in Korean War

Abstract

|
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and describe the experiences of injured soldiers in Korean War. Seven men participated in this study. They were asked open-ended and descriptive questions in order to talk about their experiences in their own terms. Contents of interviews were recorded with tape-recorder and transcribed to maintain data integrity and reduce perceptual bias. The transcripts were analyzed by the Colaizzi method. Eight themes were induced from this study. 1. Injured soldiers were in terrible situations and afraid of dying. 2. In battle fields, wounded soldiers felt indifference from others and also became indifferent to both themselves and injured fellow soldiers about their wounds and deaths. 3. Injured soldiers experienced fear of being deserted by their fellow soldiers or officers. 4. Injured soldiers became apathic, but when they realized their situations, they began to fear death and hopelessness. 5. Injured soldiers felt that the rescue was not immediate and transportation was prior to treatment. 6. Injured soldiers have felt pain, sleepiness, and starvation after they realized that they were secured. 7. Injured soldiers have attitudes of accepting their situations despite pain and discomfort in nonmedical environments. 8. Injured soldiers have appreciated and been satisfied with individualized caring and service. The result of this study might help nurse and other health care workers improve the medical service system for injured soldiers in battle fields.
